I wrote a paper last semester arguing for a faint but structurally significant allusion to Psalm 107 in Mark 4:35–6:44. In Psalm 107, there are four types of redeemed peoples who each experience a miraculous rescue from peril by the hand of Yahweh. In Mark 4:35–6:44, there are four types of redeemed peoples who each experience a miraculous rescue from peril by the hand of Jesus. Coincidence? Perhaps not. Here is a table summarizing the verbal and thematic parallels I saw between these two texts. What do you think?

  1. Your discovery doesn’t completely surprise me. I am convinced that the writer of “Mark” was a consummately skilled dramatist. Further, as the book “The Gospel of Mark and the Homeric Epics” details, he frequently very intentionally established parallels with other literature that his audiences would know.
